Stewardship always starts in the heart of the believer in Jesus Christ. Thus, stewardship is more than just dollars, it is the giving of self first. In fact, stewardship is really a lifestyle that represents the concern for others by the willingness to share what God has blessed you with through your active ministry, service and giving to your local church.
In this definition of stewardship, we understand that we are to be managers of all that God has entrusted into our care. So everything we have, health, talents, gifts, opportunities and time are given to us from God to be used for His glory. So it is not what we have, whether it is a lot or little, we serve God out of gratitude for His amazing love to us. Giving to God's work is a tangible way to exercise and prove our Christian faith and discipleship. Thus, the church is able to carry out the ministry that God has entrusted it with both in our community and around the world.
A question that is almost always asked is, what is tithing? And why should I consider tithing? First of all, the Bible declares that God, who gave us a 100%. of all we have, expects us as stewards to return to Him a tenth (10%) of our money and time in service and ministry. In this way we show how important we believe God is in our lives.
The tithe as mentioned in the Old Testament from Genesis to Malachi is required. In the New Testament, Jesus affirms this commandment coupled with a willing and grateful heart attitude. Paul exhorts the Corinthian believers to give with hilarious generously (2 Cor. 8 & 9). The reason being is that you just cannot out give God's provisions. So in one way, tithing is a test of our trust in God's supply and evidence of our faithfulness in honoring God. Trust God and try tithing if you are not already doing so.
